In a slight change to the advertised Avro Anson, the aircraft engine at the show will be the Alvis Leonides. This engine was first developed in 1936 and was produced throughout the war and into the 1950s and used on many aircraft types (and the world’s first hovercraft, the SRN1).
The Alvis Leonides radial was used on a ‘Percival Sea Prince’ aircraft, a British light transport aircraft of the early post war period. It was a twin-engine, high-wing cantilever monoplane of all metal stressed skin construction.
The engine will be fired up 4 times throughout the day which will give everyone a taste of the “sights and smells” of a bygone era.
